Adega Wine Cellars & FLO Wines

4 Jul

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing world reowned jazz artist Marcus Johnson again although this time it was for the love of wine, FLO Wine that is.

FLO Wine, part of FLO Brands, produces and sells two types of wine – a Chardonnay and a Red Blend. The wine is bottled in northern California and created using grapes from the best appellations around the state.

FLOsophy: Our philosophy is to create wines that are an exceptional value for our consumers and that appeal to a wide audience. For the 2010 FLO Red Blend, we started with a smooth, silky Merlot and blended Cabernet Sauvignon to add a backbone and lengthen the finish. Petite Sirah contributed bright upfront fruit on both the nose and palate. The 2010 FLO Chardonnay is a well-balanced, fruit forward wine. We blended a small amount of Viognier to add floral notes and the slight sweetness of Riesling to enhance the fruit flavors and soften the finish.

I tasted both the red and white was they both were delectable!
Now if you don’t know about Adega Wine Cellars & Cafe, you my friend are simply missing out one of the best gourmet food and wines in downtown Silver Spring.

History
Adega Wine Cellars & Cafe opened in August, 2003 by Walter Rhee, who wanted a neighborhood establishment where he could meld his love of gourmet cooking and passion for fine wine. Over the years, Adega has transformed from a quiet cafe to a bustling neighborhood gathering place, all the while maintaining its unique concept, character, and style. We are proud to have been one of the pioneers of the revitalization of Downtown Silver Spring, and look forward to continuing to be an integral part of this vital community, and a leading voice for independent, locally-owned business.

Visit them today as I highly reccomend the

Smokin’ Turkey Reuben
Grilled panini-style sandwich with oven-roasted turkey, havarti cheese, white wine-reduced sauerkraut, and asian pear cranberry chutney on rustic bread.

and it pairs well with the 2010 FLO Red Blend.

National Harbor Wine & Food Festival Gives Back to Local Organizations

14 May

By Amanda C. Broadnax

Last weekend’s Wine and Food Festival at the National Harbor was a consortium of culinary tasting and wine sampling accompanied by live music and a lovely waterfront. The weather was amazingly warm with a slight breeze and suddenly I was contemplating if I was suitable for boat life. One of the best things about the event was that a portion of the proceeds will go to DC Central Kitchen. www.dccentralkitchen.org                               Please take a moment and learn more about what they do and then get involved by donating or volunteering.

I was assigned to staff a wine booth for Palm Bay Distributors, which was right next to the water. As for those corks, at first all I          kept hearing was that line from Miracle on 34th St, “you’re gonna poke your eye out.” I did not poke my eye out and found out            the crowd likes cheering you on as you pop bottles.

The wines from L-R and their descriptions from the website www.palmbay.com

Bottega Vinaia Pinot Grigrio

Fresh, dry, and flavorful with a firm structure leading into a lingering finish, it displays character and finesse

Santa Rita Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon

Ripe black fruit, plums and fine herbs, gracefully combined with vanilla, cloves and fragrant spices.

Lunetta Rose Cauvit

Mostly Chardonnay with indigenous Trentino red varietals-Teroldego, Lagrein and Pinot Noir, and Fragrant, with enticing aromas of small red berries

Callia Alta Malbec

Good structure, fresh and elegant taste with notes of spices, cherries, and plums.

Petalo Moscato Spumante “Il Vino dell’Amore”

Wild roses, like the one depicted on this bottle, grow among the Moscato vines in Colli Euganei and impart a pretty floral aroma to the grapes. This scent of roses subtly perfumes the wine, together with fragrant notes of peach and apple.

Rocca delle Macie SaSyr

SaSyr is a blend of sangiovese and syrah grapes from Tuscany. A succulent, supple well-structured palate with a silky smooth finish Intense red fruit aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and raspberry.

The SaSyr was my favorite red wine and thanks to the Cooking Light Chef for bringing me some smoked cheese and meats to nibble on. Pick up their latest copy for great recipes in healthy cooking. This month’s edition has some nice variations for tacos.  www.cookinglight.com
